Introduction and Course Description: Welcome to 6th Language Arts! Our focus this school year will be learning and developing our skills as critical thinkers, readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. The development and mastery of these important literary skills not only is important to achieving success in the Language Arts classroom, it is a critical component of achieving success in other school subjects, building strong relationships with others, and attaining a flourishing career as an adult. Basically, the quality of life you experience now thorough adulthood will depend a lot on how well you read, write, and communicate with others.

Unit 2 (2nd 9 Weeks): Making Your Voice Heard
Unit 3 (3rd 9 Weeks): Facing Fears
Unit 4 (4th 9 Weeks): What Tales Tell

Grading Policy: Grades will be percentage based in the following categories:
Assessments: 30%,
Assignments: 45%,
Homework: 25%.
The grading scale is as follows:
“A” 90 – 100 “B” 80 – 89 “C” 70 – 79 “D” 60-69 “F” 0-59
Homework/Late Work Policy: Homework is due on the assigned date during the scheduled period in order to earn full credit; if it is not submitted at this time, it is considered late. Late assignments may be submitted, but for reduced credit. A late assignment submitted the next scheduled class period will be given a 20% reduction of the earned score; any assignment turned in later will be given a 50% reduction. Extenuating circumstances may be considered.
Make-up Work Policy: Regular attendance in each forty-five day grading period is necessary for a student to be successful in school. Missing work shall be made-up for all absences, including suspension. Make-up work shall be allowed for each day of absence. Your child may earn up to full credit for such work submitted with acceptable time frame outlined within DCPS Student Progression Plan.
Parent/Teacher Conference Information: If you have a question about your son’s/daughter’s grade, please check FOCUS Grade Portal via One View to see if the teacher has left any notes about specific assignments. If you still have questions, feel free to email the teacher directly. If you have more general questions about your son’s/daughter’s overall academic progress, you can contact their school counselor or you can call Ms. Cobb at extension 122 in the School Counseling Office to schedule an appointment for a parent/teacher conference. Please remember that parent/teacher conferences are only available on a limited basis and may not include all of your child’s teachers. Please be specific when scheduling a conference to just those teachers that you need to meet face-to-face.
Tutoring Schedule: Tutoring will take place in the mornings, from 8:30am to 9:15, on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Students must make an appointment for tutoring in advance.

Classroom Rituals and Routines:
1. Enter the classroom quietly to prepare for your bell ringer.
2. All trash will be held at your desk until the end of class. Responsibly place it in the trash can as you leave.
3. You are allowed to move around the classroom with the teacher’s permission. Please raise your hand for permission to move
4. Follow C.H.A.M.P.S. (Conversation Help Activity Movement Participation) as directed by Ms. Viner as you complete your work.
5. Complete all work in your binder. Materials are placed in proper areas and/or collected. Clean up around your area. Wait quietly and patiently to be dismissed by the teacher.
6. Cell Phones are to be kept off, in book bags, and out of sight

1. Remain on task and follow instructions the first time given
2. Remain in your seat unless you’ve been given permission to move
3. Raise your hand
4. Listen to others when it’s their turn to speak
5. Show respect for school and personal property
